Intrepid Travel Peru – Story 1
Lake Titicaca has fascinated me ever since I was a child. Imagine living on man-made reed islands in the largest lake in South America and could the color of the water really be so dark blue that it is nearly purple? I couldn’t believe I was going to actually experience a Titicaca island home stay!
After heading out from Puno harbor in a motor boat, we stopped to explore the floating Uros Islands – built from many layers of totora reeds that grow in lake. It was here I met the Aymara speaking inhabitants, tried some river salmon and re-hydrated potatoes, joined in some games with local kids, climbed up the small viewing tower and browsed the museum filled with cases of stuffed regional of birds.
As we cruised to our overnight destination we marveled at the huge expanse of water in every direction. It was with great excitement I stepped on to the rich red soil of Amantani Island. I had been billeted out to a local family with another female Intrepid traveler.
Our home for tonight was at Mummy Melani’s and after a welcoming smile and brief introduction, we headed off on foot together. She was dressed in the traditional brightly colored multi-layered skirts, embroidered white shirt and black sandals made from discarded tire rubber. A small scarf covered her hair. She was a delight!
At 3,800 meters (12,467 feet) above sea level, the short walk took some time. As I stopped every few steps and gasped for air, our host looked on, mildly amused and with great patience. As we walked in through the courtyard, a small main adobe house to the right and our quarters to the left came into view.
A tiny wooden staircase led to the door and inside to our room. Two single beds with a table and chair. There were 5 alpaca blankets on each bed; a sign of things to come. No electricity, running water or plumbing. The squat outhouse was a short distance through the vegetable patch and doorless. It faced into the neighbors, and yes, they were all smiles when I went for a visit later that day, torch in one hand and paper in the other.
We settled in comfortably with an early dinner of fried eggs with potato wedges accompanied by lovely flower tea. Our host and her eldest daughter had prepared the meal over an outside fire.
My roommate and I sat out on the landing; the sun was shining and the view spectacular. We wandered to the water’s edge and were surprised at the pastel colors of the stones that had washed ashore. It was getting dark and the temperature was dropping rapidly.
At 8pm our group met up at the local hall on the island for the evening’s entertainment that had been arranged by our host families. There was beer and soft drink, music and dancing. As Quechua is the main language on Amantani, conversation was limited to a few words of Spanish and lots of hand signals and facial gestures.
The traditional folk dancing was fantastic but exhausting at that altitude. With tired but happy spirits we walked home with Mummy Melani. It was freezing so we were quick into bed and under the blankets that were heavy but very effective. Sleep came quickly.
Daybreak streamed through the small uncovered windows. I was anxious to leave the warmth of my bed. A quick wash of the face and a dash into our clothes; we were ready to meet up at the pier. Our homestay had come to an end. It was an unforgettable unique experience and one that would be relived many times in my memories and when chatting to family and friends.
Intrepid Travel Peru Story 2
Our group arrived in Puerto Maldonado after the flight from Cuzco. A short bus ride to the main jetty and then we boarded a motorized canoe for the journey ahead. For the next two days, home would be an eco-tourism lodge located on the Tambopata River within Tambopata Candamo Reserve.
After settling in to our bungalow, I was ready for some adventure. Off to meet up with our local guide and then a nature walk through the secondary rainforest. Light filtered through the dense canopy of trees as we made our way through the lush undergrowth that thrived in the heavily humid conditions.
Out came the binoculars and ornithology book so we could identify the varied birdlife. A tarantula hovered around his hole in the dirt and sounds of rainforest life were all around us. I saw a small furry creature scurry by my feet, perhaps a capybara? Rodents are big in South America!
After a good breakfast the next morning and a short boat ride further upriver, our guide led us on a 2 hour walk through the primary rainforest. He explained that many of the large species can be rare, shy, unpredictable and very difficult to see. The birds were easy to spot when we reached the clay licks. The macaws and other species of parrots and parakeets make their way to these salt deposits as it helps with their digestion.
We climbed into small canoes to paddle out on the lake for a closer look at the rainbow of colors high in the trees. Scarlet, red and green, red-bellied and many more; all flapping their wings and talking incessantly to each other. Butterflies in abundance; brilliant blues and some as big as the palm of my hand!
As the skies opened up and a torrent of rain teemed down, I started to think we had little chance of spotting a jaguar, then I could think of nothing except the piranha below in the murky water. Needless to say it was a fast paddle back to land before our canoe started taking in water!
The hike out was fantastic. By this stage we were completely drenched by the tropical downpour but fortunately cameras were protected in plastic bags in our packs. The trees towered above us, dark and mysterious with minimal light. The smells were amazing. Deep breaths; a chance to fill the lungs with this magical air. I couldn’t wipe the grin from my face, even though I was trying not to fall over in the mud.
As hard as I looked, the elusive jaguar was not to be seen. We had all strained our eyes in search of large sleeping cats with limbs outstretched and tails resting against tree trunks. They hid from us, but fortunately our efforts that day would not go unrewarded. Back at camp and in a dry change of clothes, after dinner we headed out for some caiman spotting and couldn’t believe our luck. Near these small alligators in the muddy river, lounging by the water’s edge was a cat in all its glory. It was more than a little camera shy and made a quick escape into the river as we approached… but what a brilliant experience!

Climate change is one of the most critical issues the world is facing today. Scientists are telling us that we must act with urgency to reduce our carbon emissions if we are going to stop catastrophic irreversible impacts to our precious home.
Here at Intrepid Travel, we’ve taken a long hard look at all our operations and have initiated various actions to reduce our contributions to global warming. We’re also endeavoring to help empower our staff and travellers to participate in emissions reductions measures.
carbon neutral
In December 2006, Intrepid Travel announced the goal of becoming a carbon neutral company in 2010. It was a massive goal but we are proud to say that we have achieved it! We’re pretty chuffed to be able to announce that Intrepid Travels business emissions (globally) are now carbon neutral and will have (net) zero carbon emissions from 2010 and every year there after!
In our journey toward carbon neutrality, Intrepid Travel underwent a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of our business. This was to help us recognize our impacts and identify the main sources of carbon emissions from our operations. From this process, we identified that our corporate emissions (offices and retail stores- globally), our trips and the flights that our passengers take to join an Intrepid tour, were our main sources of carbon emissions. We needed to come up with a way to address these areas and so the Carbon Management Plan was created.

Intrepid Travel carbon management plan is made up of the following principles:
A. Measure
This principle involves reviewing what Intrepid Travel already measures and understanding what we need to measure and monitor in order to be carbon neutral. We identified what we need to be measured by:
- reviewing CO2 data we were already capturing
- setting our organizational and operational boundaries boundaries (ie what emissions were we responsible for)
- creating a Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Inventory. The inventory is just a compilation of the different sources (within our boundary) which produce emissions that contribute to Climate Change (ie- electricity, business travel, waste etc).
As identified in the LCA, we concentrate on capturing data relating to our:
- corporate emissions
- trips
- passenger flights
B. Avoid/Reduce
This principle involves Intrepid Travel looking at activities through which emissions can either be avoided. eg. not having a light on in a vacant room or be reduced which decreases the intensity of the carbon emissions from activities that often can not be avoided. (eg. making lighting more efficient through the use of “greener” globes, using a more fuel efficient vehicle etc)
For emissions stemming from all Intrepid Travel offices/retail stores (this includes offshore companies where Intrepid has operational/policy control), Intrepid has put together a list of practical ways in which our offices and stores can avoid or reduce their footprint, including switching to an alternative energy source that may include sourcing from renewable sources or by exchanging fuel sources so that GHG impact is minimized eg. Converting to green energy to power the office.
With Intrepid Travel trips – they are low impact relative to other group travel due to their design. We travel in small groups, use local transport where we can and encourage our passengers to eat and shop in local eateries and stores.
Flights – we offer passengers an opportunity to offset their flights when they book their airfare through Intrepid to try and reduce total net impact of the trip. All Intrepid Travel staff flights for business are offset
C. Assess
This principle is used to reconcile all the actions and initiatives to reducing our carbon footprint and match them up to our objectives. Are we achieving our reduction targets? If not, a review will need to be conducted and new, feasible reduction opportunities will need to be sought.
D. Offset
A carbon offset is any project or initiative that indirectly reduces GHG emissions at one source by investing in GHG emissions reductions elsewhere – effectively balancing out GHG emissions.

- all residual emissions from its offices and stores (globally)
- all Intrepid trips (where Intrepid maintains pricing control)
- offers offsets on flights for passengers booking their airfare through Intrepid
Intrepid Travel ensures that the offsets purchased are:
- cost effective
- have accreditation according to a recognized international standard
- offered by an offset provider who is independently verified
- able to offer other benefits as well as carbon offsetting such as local employment or other economic contribution to the local communities where the projects are based (preferred but not essential)
Offsets are reviewed annually and information regarding the rigor in the science and methodologies as well as the providers behind offset products will be monitored.
This plan will see Intrepid Travel manage our carbon emissions and minimize our negative impact on the environment.

The Intrepid Perpetual Support Fund account has been developed by The Intrepid Foundation Incorporated in conjunction with the Charities Aid Foundation Australia. All donations made to this account are equally divided each year: half is retained to conserve and grow capital for funding projects into the future and half is distributed to our current partner international non-government organizations.
All donations to both funds are matched by Intrepid Travel dollar for dollar.

We have been using HootSuite PRO for a couple of months now, and it was the smartest decision we have made since we started our business!!We cannot even explain all the benefits of HootSuite in one blog post without overwhelming our readers!
